Bike racks for Tesla vehicles are accessories designed to allow you to transport bicycles safely and securely on your Tesla vehicle. Tesla offers several official accessories and solutions for bike transportation, and there are also third-party options available.
Here are some common types of bike racks for Tesla Model Y vehicles:
Hitch-Mounted Bike Rack: Many Tesla vehicles come equipped with a trailer hitch receiver, and you can use hitch-mounted bike racks that attach to the hitch. These racks can typically carry multiple bicycles and are available in various styles, including platform racks and hanging racks. Some popular brands for hitch-mounted bike racks include Thule, Yakima, and Kuat.
Roof-Mounted Bike Rack: Roof-mounted bike racks attach to the crossbars on the roof of your Tesla. These racks allow you to carry your bikes on the roof while leaving the rear of the vehicle accessible. Thule and Yakima also offer roof-mounted bike racks compatible with Tesla’s roof rack system.
Trunk-Mounted Bike Rack: Trunk-mounted bike racks strap onto the rear trunk or hatch of your Tesla. These racks are typically easy to install and remove and are suitable for carrying one or two bikes.
Tesla-Branded Bike Rack: Tesla offers its own branded accessories, and they have, in the past, offered a Tesla-branded hitch-mounted bike rack designed for their vehicles. These racks are often designed to match the aesthetics of Tesla cars. However, I find that for the Model Y, they now only offer the roof crossbars to which you can then attach your roof bike rack. These will not be considered in this article
Best Tesla Model Y Bike Racks
I will be providing a list of the best Model Y bike racks that you can buy. But, before doing that, I will provide you with a guide on things to look out for in the best racks so that you can make your own decisions even outside the list that I will provide.
Another goal is to provide you with all you need to make the best purchase decisions not only for your bike racks, but for any Tesla accessories that you may want to purchase in the future.
- Tesla Model Compatibility: Ensure that the bike rack you choose is compatible with your specific Tesla model. Different Tesla vehicles may have different roof configurations, hitch options, or trunk designs, so it’s essential to select a bike rack that fits your car.
- Type of Bike Rack: Decide which type of bike rack best suits your needs:
I already described each of these types in the previous section
- Number of Bikes: Determine how many bikes you need to transport. Choose a bike rack that can accommodate the number of bicycles you plan to carry.
- Bike Weight Capacity: Be aware of the weight capacity of the bike rack. Ensure it can safely support the weight of your bikes, including any electric bikes, which can be heavier.
- Ease of Installation and Removal: Consider how easy it is to install and remove the bike rack from your Tesla. You may want a rack that doesn’t require tools for installation and can be quickly attached and detached.
- Security Features: Look for bike racks with security features such as locks to prevent theft of your bikes and the rack itself. Some racks also have locking mechanisms that secure the bikes to the rack.
- Accessibility: Determine if the bike rack allows you to access the trunk or rear hatch of your Tesla while the bikes are loaded. Some hitch-mounted racks tilt or swing away to provide access.
- Compatibility with Bike Types: Ensure that the bike rack is compatible with the types of bikes you plan to transport, including frame styles, tire sizes, and wheelbase lengths.
- Foldability or Storage: If you need to store the bike rack when not in use, consider a rack that can be folded for compact storage.
- Clearance: Pay attention to the clearance between the bike rack and your Tesla. Ensure that the rack won’t scratch or damage your vehicle’s finish.
- Aerodynamics and Wind Noise: Roof-mounted bike racks can affect your Tesla’s aerodynamics and may create wind noise. Consider aerodynamic designs and noise-reduction features.
- Cost and Budget: Determine your budget for a bike rack and choose one that fits within your price range. Keep in mind that premium features may come with a higher price tag.
- Reviews and Recommendations: Research and read reviews from other Tesla owners who have used the bike rack you’re considering. Note that many of the bike racks are not designed for just Tesla vehicles, and the experience of users differ across vehicle types. So, be sure to check reviews specifically from Tesla owners.
- Warranty and Support: Check the warranty offered by the bike rack manufacturer. Ensure that you have access to customer support in case you encounter any issues.
With the above in mind, let’s have a look at some of the best bike racks for Tesla model Y in the market today.
1. Kuat Racks NV 2.0 Bike Hitch Rack
When you have 4.7 ratings on Amazon, it is likely that you are doing something right. And quite frankly, after testing out this product, I think that without a doubt, the Kuat 2.0 is arguably the best bike rack for Tesla model Y today.
First, it can hold 2 bikes of 60 pounds…each, 120 pounds total! So you can get your powerful mountain bikes up on this rack, no problem. It also holds wheelbases up to 48 inches, and tires as large as 4.8.
It comes with fully integrated security cable locks, so you rest assured that your setup is secure. As for installation, it doesn’t get any easier. The Kuat 2.0 is a no-tool install setup, with a hand tight hitch cam system!
- Carries 2 bikes of 60 pounds each
- Light rack weight for optimized aerodynamics
- Impressive hand-tight cam system hitch connection
- Security cables and standard locking hitch pin all come included
- 3 levels of adjustability to suit any type of bike you need to hitch on
- Solid-looking, robust, intuitive, durable rack that is built to be easy to use and last a long time to come
You could argue that the price is a bit steep. But I think that the sheer quality, relevance, and value add of the Kuat 2.0 justifies the price, especially when compared with other products in the same ballpark.
2. Thule T2 Pro XT/XTR Hitch Bike Rack
There is a good reason why this is one of the most popular bike racks for Tesla Model Y out there. First, it works as a tire mount, wheel mount, and hitch mount. But it serves best as a hitch mount, especially when aerodynamic efficiency is a big consideration. When you consider all the important features for model Y bike racks listed above, it ticks most of the boxes.
It is foldable, easy to install and remove, supports up to 60 pounds of load and 2 bikes, made from durable metal, secure and easy to store.
- Supports multiple bikes
- Foldable for easy storage
- Auto attach system for super-easy installation and removal
- Easy to secure the bike to the Model Y without frame contact, using the frame-free ratcheting arm
- Great clearance as it tilts down for rear of vehicle access, and folds up when not in use
I find no real cons with this product. Make sure you go for this T2 Pro Xt. There are other variants of this product including the EasyFold, Pro XT Add-on, and Classic, but they do not perform as well as the model I have detailed.
While the Thule above is a hitch rack, this product is a roof rack and is one of the best roof racks for Model Y. It is a great alternative for when you already have other cargo on the vehicle’s hitch and need to place your bike on the roof.
The UpRide roof rack supports a load capacity of 44 pounds, which I think is decent for a roof rack, especially when you consider (and you must) aerodynamics and bike security at certain speeds.
The roof rack only supports 1 bike, which I think is good for safety. It offers no-frame contact attachment, so your vehicle is always protected.
Installation and removal are quick and easy, with ratcheting wheel strap and secure hook for optimal safety and security.
- Compatible with most bike wheels
- Easy to switch carrier from one side of the vehicle to the other
- It is suitable for bikes with carbon frames, unconventional designs, rear suspension, and bottle cages.
- Slick design to maximize aerodynamics
- Lock to lock the bike to rack, and rack to vehicle is sold separately
- Adapter to fit 5 inches tires is sold separately
4. Saris Bike Trunk Rack
The Saris trunk rank is definitely not inferior to any of the racks on this list; it is just different. Trunk bike racks have many considerations that other types of racks do not have to deal with, and this product aces all the tests.
It supports 70 pounds of load, which is very impressive for a trunk rack. When it comes to style, convenience, ease of use, and durability, you may not find many trunk racks that are better than this one.
It has rubber feet to protect your Tesla and coated straps to protect the bike. The durable material ensures that it does not rust.
It can support up to 2 bikes of 35 pounds each, with ratchets that have straps to prevent sway no matter what speed you are on.
- Arc–based design separates bikes on different levels
- Spring buckle straps with vinyl-coated hooks
- 2 bikes with a total of 70 pounds load support
- Sway-free loading
- One of the strongest frames in the market today
- Excellent clearance when opening the trunk
None that I know of
