Read below to see why your Tesla trunk button is not working and what you can do about this issue.

Why is Tesla Trunk Button Not Working?

Did you know that the Tesla has a feature called the Valet Mode? With the Valet Mode If it is activated then your trunk will be locked until the Valet Mode is deactivated.

Did you also know that if you have a low or dead battery this can be the reason why your Tesla trunk button is not working. There are a few reasons why your Tesla trunk button is not working.

There could be things like the latch or the actuator being faulty and preventing you from opening your trunk or making the Tesla trunk button stop working.

Below I will be going over the most common reasons why your Tesla trunk button is not working based on what other drivers have experienced.

1. Tesla is in Valet Mode

One of the most common reasons why your Tesla trunk button is not working could be due to a certain feature on your Tesla being activated. This feature is called Valet Mode, which when turned on will lock the trunk and will remain locked until you turn the Valet Mode off.

This might be why your Tesla trunk button is not working, if the Valet Mode is turned on your Tesla trunk button will not work. If you do not remember turning on your Valet Mode on your Tesla check anyway, you never know it could have been turned on by mistake.

Fix – Turn Off Valet Mode

If you notice that your Tesla trunk button is not working one of the first things you should do is check to see if the Valet Mode on your Tesla is turned on. Depending on the model of the Tesla you drive, the Valet Mode may be located in different areas.

With that being said it is most likely under the Controls setting on your Tesla touchscreen. You will see a Valet Mode driver profile icon, this is where you can see if your Valet Mode is turned on or off on your Tesla. If you see that the Valet Mode is turned on, turn it off and see if your Tesla trunk button now works.

2. Tesla Battery is Low or Dead

One thing to keep in mind when your Tesla trunk button is not working is to check the battery power on your Tesla. This is a common reason, if your Tesla’s battery is low or dead, features like the trunk button are not going to work.

Either it is not working to conserve the battery power of your Tesla if the battery is low, or the trunk button is not working because there is no power to your Tesla. If your Tesla trunk button is not working the best thing you can do is check the battery on your Tesla.

Fix – Check Your Tesla’s Battery

As mentioned above if your Tesla battery is low or dead the trunk button will not work. Check the charge on your Tesla if the battery is super low or dead. This is your sign to charge your Tesla. Once your Tesla is charged try using the trunk button again to see if the issue was with a low or dead battery.

If your Tesla’s battery is not taking a charge then your battery might be bad. When this is the case you will need to replace your battery at the nearest Tesla Service Center.

3. Issue With Tesla Electronics

When you are experiencing your Tesla trunk button not working and your Tesla is not in Valet Mode and you have a good charge on your Tesla. The issue could be that there is an issue with the electronics.

Either it could be a damaged or loose wire, or it could also be a blown fuse somewhere that is causing these issues. Since Tesla has a lot of different wires and fuses, unless you are familiar with the electric system in your Tesla you should take it to a professional to get it fixed.

Fix – Check For Loose Wires or a Blown Fuse

If you think that the reason why your Tesla trunk button is not working is due to a loose, damaged wire, or a blown fuse. You can look over your Tesla to see if you notice any loose wires or damaged wires.

However, if you are not familiar with the Tesla electric system you should not attempt to fix this on your own. If you do find any damage or loose wires or even find the fuse that is below, schedule an appointment with your nearest Tesla Service Center to fix the problem.

Note, that if you do not have a Tesla Service Center near you can schedule an appointment at a second-party repair shop. Make sure that the mechanic knows how to work on Teslas or else you may do more damage to your electric vehicle.

4. Tesla Trunk Door is Stuck

When your Tesla has a good charge, you know that the Valet Mode is turned off, and there is no issue with the electronics on your Tesla. There could be a chance that your Tesla trunk door is stuck and that is why your Tesla trunk button is not working.

If your Tesla trunk door is stuck then the key will not work either. When your key will not even work, this is a good sign that the trunk is stuck.

This could be due to your trunk latch malfunctioning, when this happens your Tesla trunk button will not work. If you need access to your trunk right away you can pull the emergency trunk cable to open the trunk of your Tesla.

Fix – Use Emergency Trunk Release Cable to Open Your Trunk

Is your Tesla trunk door stuck and the Tesla trunk button is not working? Have you tried using your key? If even that did not work your trunk door is most likely stuck due to a faulty trunk latch.

Thankfully there is a way that you can open the trunk door by pulling the emergency trunk release cable. You can access the emergency room trunk release cable through the cabin of your Tesla.

You will need to pull the passenger seat forward and crawl into the trunk of your Tesla. You will see a yellow handle, that is the emergency trunk release cable, pull that to open your trunk.

If the trunk latch is faulty you will need to get it replaced. Schedule an appointment with your nearest Tesla Service Center to replace the trunk latch on your Tesla.

5. Tesla Trunk Actuator is Malfunctioning

Have you considered that the issue could be with your Tesla actuator malfunctioning? When you use the Tesla trunk button it sends a signal to an actuator. That actuator controls the latch that locks your trunk.

If the actuator is malfunctioning this could be why your Tesla button is not working because it is not sending that signal to the actuator. When this is the case your Tesla trunk will not open due to a faulty actuator. You should get this replaced as soon as possible if you want access to your trunk.

Fix – Replace Tesla Trunk Actuator

Check to see if your Tesla trunk actuator is malfunctioning and needs to be replaced. When the issue is with the actuator on your Tesla this is something that needs to be replaced.

Unless you are familiar with working on Tesla, leave this repair to the professionals. Schedule an appointment with your nearest Tesla Service Center to get the trunk actuator replaced.

If you have to go to a second-party repair shop make sure that they are used to working on Teslas or else there could be more damage caused to your electric vehicle.
